Why is my data running out so fast?

If your data runs out fast, the usual suspects are: high-quality video streaming, background app refresh, cloud photo backups, Wi-Fi Assist silently switching you to cellular, or hotspot use. To find your culprit, check your daily usage chart in Databit and the per-app list in Settings > Cellular.

The 7 most common causes

  1. High-quality video. YouTube, Netflix, TikTok or Instagram reels on auto quality can burn 1–3 GB per hour. Cause #1 by a landslide.
  2. Background App Refresh. Apps updating content while you're not using them (Settings > General > Background App Refresh).
  3. Cloud backups and photos. iCloud Photos, Google Photos or WhatsApp uploading media over cellular.
  4. Wi-Fi Assist. When your Wi-Fi is weak, the iPhone switches to cellular without telling you (bottom of Settings > Cellular).
  5. Hotspot. A laptop on your hotspot consumes like ten phones.
  6. Automatic App Store downloads and updates over cellular.
  7. High-quality music streaming. Milder than video, but hours of 320 kbps audio add up to 140+ MB per hour.

Find YOUR cause (the 5-minute method)

  1. See which day usage spiked. Open Databit's daily chart: if Tuesday shows 1.8 GB and every other day shows 200 MB, something happened Tuesday.
  2. Cross-reference the per-app list. Settings > Cellular shows which apps have spent the most. The one matching your spike is the culprit.
  3. Fix and verify. Apply the fix (lower video quality, cut that app's background refresh) and watch the next days in Databit. If the bars drop, it worked.
